A note from Cheri: This is a photograph of a painting created by Fra’ Angelico between 1420 and 1423. The title of his work is The Crucifixion. He painted it with tempera on wood panel. Textured gilding adds dimension to the work.
Like so many of the images that I photograph, this artwork inspires awe. It depicts the dramatic moments after the deposition of Christ. His Mother Mary, who has stood throughout the Crucifixion, now collapses in grief. Meanwhile, her companions, the lamenting Marys, gather her into their arms. The description accompanying this work notes the delicacy in Fra’ Angelico hand and the creative application of gilding to this panel. And although it is an example of Fra’ Angelico’s early work, his innovative composition reveals the talent that will evolve in his later, mature work. The Crucifixion currently resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
