Mary's Touch Program 3.8: A Very Special Program Dedicated to the Brown Scapular and Our Lady of Mount Carmel

"The Scapular represents a special consecration to God. It identifies a spiritual disposition…of our commitment to God to live the Gospel more intensely. Wearing the Scapular leads us to a deeper participation in the sacraments, from which we receive God’s grace.

When we put on the Scapular, we are putting on the garment of Jesus that was given to us by our Heavenly Mother. Just as she clothed Him as a little child, she clothes us with the Scapular. The Scapular represents our union with Mary. It is a symbol of her protection and intercession for us, her children."

July 16 is the Feast of the Brown Scapular or, more properly, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The Brown Scapular has been around since the Middle Ages, but surprisingly, many people do not know about this powerful sacramental and the graces that come from wearing it.

In this very special edition of Mary's Touch, Sally Robb discusses the history and meaning of the Brown Scapular. Next you'll hear from Eduardo, someone you've heard from before. While working for a power company, he was electrocuted with over 7,000 volts of electricitynot once, but twice. He was badly injured, but he credits the Brown Scapular with saving his life....

…and you’ll hear from Sylvia. Her father left the Church and fell into a life of alcohol, abusive behavior, and the occult. When an accident brought him to Death's door, he reached back to embrace his Catholic faith and the Brown Scapular.

Finally, Father Kevin Rai, Spiritual Director of Mary's Touch, provides a beautiful explanation of the Brown Scapular, how to receive it, and how to wear it as a symbol of the cloth of Christ.

Musical Credits:

* This week's show features "Cascade" from Mani Sierra’s CD, Savant.

Mary's Touch Program 3.6: Marlene and Katie

This show features Marlene. She is the founder of Our Lady of Lourdes North American Volunteers. Her life was changed forever when, in 2002, she won a free trip to Europe and made a stop at Lourdes. On her second visit, while waiting in line for the baths, she gave up her place to another pilgrim in dire need. Perhaps as reward for her kindness, she was not only admitted to the baths but spent the day bathing the sick and dying. After the profound privilege of assisting in the baths that day, “the American housewife pulled from the queue” was inspired while kissing the floor to promise Our Lady to return the next year with more volunteers.

...and you’ll hear from Katie. She converted to Catholicism shortly before her marriage but drifted away from the Church. While studying the book of Revelation, she discovered Mary through the eyes of St. John the Evangelist, and through Mary, who pointed the way to Her Son, Katie fell in love with the Blessed Sacrament and returned to the Catholic Church.

Mary's Touch Program 3.4: Nan and Claire

"I work a lot with terminally ill children and families that have lost a child. You are on very holy ground when you work with children and certainly when you work with people who have lost a child....My medium is watercolor...always prayer, paint, and plant....I remember googling 'garden', a word that appears in the Bible 86,859 times. If you look at the life of Jesus, how many events are tied to the garden?"

Nan, is a florigrapher someone who writes and tells stories with flowers. Through her love of flowers, she was drawn to the Rosary, which means "rose garden"; and through her devotion to our Blessed Mother, she was drawn to Christ...

...and you’ll from Claire. As a young girl, she always felt close to Mary but did not really know her. As she grew up, Claire found, through the Rosary, that Mary was leading her to Christ and to a vocation that she did not expect.

Program note: For more information on Nan's ministry, contact her by e-mail at nanprays@msn.com or call 724. 420.1077.

Mary's Touch Program 3.3: Sister Marilyn Minter and James

"She sat up in bed, and she looked in the corner of the room. Her face was filled with such delight, such peace, such awe at such holiness that I immediately went down on my knees. I knew that Mary was there because I heard the words, 'Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.'"

In this show, you'll hear from Sister Marilyn, a Franciscan nun who, at a young age, watched an older Sister die while having a vision of the Blessed Mother. Through that experience, she came to understand that apparitions of Mary are real, and there is no reason to fear death...

...and you’ll hear from James. He relates how a vow to Mary protected some Italian seminariansincluding a future pope: John XXIII.

Mary's Touch Program 3.2: Julie and Father Tom Forrest

"I entered into my marriage with the wrong concept: What's in it for me? As long as I was being served, everything was OK....That took me on a rollercoaster of deep disappointment, disappointment in realizing who I was....After hitting rock bottom in my marriage and in my life—I had done it all, and still I was feeling empty—the day came when I realized the importance of the relationship...and that was while I was praying the Rosary..."

Julie grew up Catholic, but only went through the motions. She had a career, money, and a family, but she believed the purpose of life was to make herself happy. It was an attitude she brought to her marriage with devastating consequences...

...and you’ll hear from Father Tom Forrest, a Redemptorist priest who reminds us that Mary can intercede for us in all matters large and small .

Mary's Touch Program 3.1: Cheryl and Steve

"I would say out loud to Mary, 'It's not that I don't appreciate a Heavenly Mother, but quite frankly, I need an earthly mother. I certainly love you, and I'm glad you're here, but I need somebody to help me with my children...I need my mom!'"

In this show, you'll hear from a woman who grew up emotionally distant from her mother, but when Cheryl had her own children and needed her mom, God gave her a sign through His Mother that her own mother was there for her, too...

...and you'll hear from Steve, who talks about how his relationship with Mary drew him to Christ, strengthened him as a father, and supports his work in Catholic media.

Mary's Touch Program 3.0: Greg and Bishop Stephen E. Blaire

"'As a young child...at the age of ten, I was introduced to pornography...things that became my catechesis for sex, sexuality, and, unfortunately, I took much of that mindset into my marriage relationship. As I began to discover the evils of pornography through the Theology of the Body, the logical solution for me was to go back and rediscover the beauty of women, and that started with praying and meditating on our Blessed Mother...seeing the beauty and dignity that she had."

Greg was exposed to pornography at a very early age, and the attitudes he developed from those experiences nearly ended his marriage.  Then he discovered that prayer and meditation on our Blessed Mother were the keys to understanding all women...

...and you'll hear from Bishop Stephen E. Blaire, of the Diocese of Stockton, who reminds us that a focus on Mary is a focus on Christ.

Program note: In Greg's story, he talks about his ministry, which is dedicated to marriage education and enrichment through the teachings of John Paul II and the Catholic Church.
